Minister Flaherty Launches RDSP Review

Finance Minister James Flaherty today launched a review of the Registered Disability Savings Plan.  This keeps his promise made shortly after the RDSP was launched in December 2008.

On the one hand, the plan is an amazing success: in just three years, nearly 50,000 Canadians with disabilities have assets of approximately $350 million.  This group of people are well on their way to establishing a more secure future for themselves.

On the other hand, an estimated 450,000 Canadians has not opened RDSPs.  Many community advocates have heard concerns and reasons for not opening plans.  For these issues we can formulate solutions.  For the untold thousands who are not even aware that the RDSP exists and for whom “saving” and “assets” are foreign words we need to invest in awareness and financial literacy.
